SAVOR THIS: MAUBY

a bottle of beer next to a glass of orange juice

Here at Virgin Islands Food Tours, we’re all about transforming you from visitor to local in more ways than one! It’s important to us to share some Crucian foodie gems with you before you arrive to the island and even after you’ve left (we hope this will entice you to come back)! This time around, we’re sharing the unique beverage, mauby.

The taste of this popular Caribbean drink is an acquired one that many either love dearly or detest adamantly. Mauby is a drink made from the bark of the mauby tree native to the northern Caribbean and south Florida. A traditional mauby recipe will often include an assortment of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel and cloves, and sweetened to taste. You’ll find some people who may ferment the drink using a portion of the previous batch, but oftentimes it is consumed unfermented.

Because of its bitter after taste, some will say that mauby drinking isn’t for everyone but there are many Caribbean people who swear by the aromatics and flavors found in this decadent beverage. Either way, we strongly urge that you give it a try during your visit here on St. Croix. You will find this beverage on the menu of various local restaurants, food trucks and street vendors throughout the island. We recommend the mauby from the award-winning Queen’s Maubi for your first go at this beverage. With flavors like mango twist and lemon, you can find their version at various local events and at local supermarkets, convenience stores and gas stations. Find them on Facebook and give them a call when you’re on island and in need of a unique beverage experience! Tell them Virgin Islands Food Tours sent you!
